At Amytis, we’re building a new kind of research workspace — not just another digital lab notebook. Why? Because after decades of rapid scientific advancement, the core tool most researchers still rely on to manage their work hasn’t evolved to keep pace.

Despite huge leaps in research complexity, data volume, and interdisciplinary collaboration, most scientists are still recording and managing their work in tools that barely differ from what Darwin might have used. In fact, our market research shows that only 40% of researchers use commercial electronic lab notebooks (ELNs), and 20% are still using pen and paper. It’s not that scientists are resistant to digital tools — it’s that the tools available simply don’t address the real needs of modern research.

We believe it’s time for something better.

Research isn’t linear. So why are our tools?

Today’s science is fast-moving and data-heavy. A typical research project might involve hundreds of experiments, massive datasets, complex processing steps, and ever-evolving literature. Managing that in a linear, text-based format — whether on paper or in a digital notebook — is like trying to organise your hard drive using sticky notes.

At Amytis, we’ve taken a fundamentally different approach.

We built our workspace on graph database technology — the same kind of architecture behind Google Search and social media recommendation engines — because graphs reflect the true structure of research. Ideas don’t flow in straight lines. They branch, merge, evolve. Our interface lets researchers visualise their entire project as a connected, interactive map — making it easier to trace the story, spot gaps, and build understanding.

Built by researchers, for researchers

Amytis wasn’t born in a boardroom — it was born at the lab bench. Our team includes both computational and wet-lab scientists, and we’ve felt firsthand the pain of managing complex research in clunky, disconnected tools.

That experience has shaped everything we’ve built: from the way our workspace lets you tag and filter nodes, to the ability to integrate all kinds of data types — from protocols to PDFs to NMR spectra — into a single, navigable structure. And because most of us are visual learners, we’ve made it easy to customise maps with node colours, icons, and layout tools — turning research into something that’s not just organised, but intuitive.

More than management — real power for discovery

Amytis isn’t just about keeping track of your work. It’s about unlocking insight. Our next development phase includes features for no-code data modelling and, soon after, a deeply integrated AI assistant that will help automate workflows, surface connections, and suggest next steps.

Because in today’s world, research is too important to be held back by outdated tools.

We’re not here to digitise the lab notebook. We’re here to rethink it — and build something that’s finally fit for the science of the 21st century.
